We're delighted to announce Ryan Howell as our fifth ICARUS Ambassador!

Ryan has won our fifth Facebook photo contest with his outstanding photograph above, taken of a waterfall in Iceland.

In return for winning our contest and agreeing to champion the ICARUS course for the next 12 months, he's received a bespoke canvas print (courtesy of Love to Frame) and free course place worth £999 and is now on his way to earning a PfCO.

As you'll be hearing a lot more from Ryan over the coming months, we thought we'd introduce him through some questions below.

What drone was used to capture this photo?

I used a  DJI Phantom 4.

What other drones do you fly?

I've previously had a Phantom 3 Advanced. I'm a camera operator for a couple of Yuneec drones at work. I'm a Crime Scene Manager and we have a small team at work that enable us to deploy drones at crime scenes, accident sites and to assist in searching for missing persons.

Where are you based?

I live in Hertfordshire.

What grew your interest in drone technology?

I've always been a keen photographer, I used to do weddings and photography as a big part of my day job. A few years ago, I saw an advert on Youtube for a drone that followed snowboarders whilst they surfed. I was hooked the moment I saw it. I just had to have one.

What’s the most exciting/interesting thing you’ve photographed/filmed from the air?

I take my drone everywhere I'm able to, which means it's there if I want to fly. I take it on every holiday I go on. I spent a week driving around Iceland in September, sleeping in the back of a camper van, in the freezing cold. I got some incredible photos that I'm really proud of. One of the photos was entered in this competition

How long have you been flying unmanned aircraft (including model helicopters etc.)?

I've been flying for just over twelve months. I've managed 100 flights in that time. I wish it was many more!

What do you plan to do once you gain your PfCO?

I've got a couple of plans when I gain the PfCO. I want to do something different than others. I'm going to try and use my knowledge and experience of Policing and Crime Scenes along with the drones.

 Do you have a website?

Not yet. That's on to do list! My travel drones are on my Instagram profile @ryanhowell85
