As of 25 August 2016, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has renamed the Permission for Aerial Work (PfAW) to Permission for Commercial Operation (PfCO). When searching for operators or courses related to commercial permissions and PfAW, please search for the new name (PfCO).
Current PfAW holders are only affected when it comes to renewing their permissions, in which case any references to PfAW should be replaced with PfCO. There is no need to resit or resubmit paperwork immediately.
This has followed an update of the Air Navigation Order (now ANO 2016) which replaces articles 166 & 167 with articles 94 & 95.
Commercial Operation is defined in article 7 as:
“…any operation of an aircraft other than for public transport—
(a) which is available to the public; or
(b) which, when not made available to the public, is performed under a contract between an operator and a customer, where the latter has no control over the operator, in return for remuneration or other valuable consideration.”
