We're delighted to reveal Adam Blackmore-Heal as our first ICARUS Ambassador!
Adam won our first Facebook photo contest with his wonderful image (above) of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment on the Norfolk Beach of Holkham. In return for winning our contest and agreeing to champion the ICARUS course for the next 12 months, he's received a free course place worth £999 and is now on his way to earning a PfCO.
As you'll be hearing a lot more from Adam over the coming months, we thought we'd introduce him through some questions below.
What drone was used to capture this photo?
I used a DJI Phantom 3 Professional. The photo was taken in RAW and then edited in Adobe Lightroom.
What other drones do you fly?
I also fly a Yuneec Typhoon H.
Where are you based?
I am based in Surrey, next to the Berkshire border.
What grew your interest in drone technology?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what started my interest in drone technology, but it certainly grew after seeing small fixed-wing UAV’s being used in Afghanistan with reconnaissance purposes. It wasn’t for another several years later that I was given the opportunity to fly a friends DJI Phantom 2, much to my wife’s dismay, I was immediately hooked.
What’s the most exciting/interesting thing you’ve photographed/filmed from the air?
This past summer I was away in Norfolk with my Regiment during annual training. I spoke to my chain of command before-hand about bringing my drones and they were very keen. During the 3 weeks in Norfolk I filmed galloping horses riding along the beach and swimming in the sea (the same location my competition photo was taken), I filmed various training and I filmed two days of cross-country jumping. It was exciting for me as not only did it offer a fantastic subject to film - testing my abilities - but it was also the first time I had to approach flying with more of a professional head rather than just a hobbyist’s one – liaising with the various different heads of department to make sure than riders and horses were happy, that the airspace was cleared for me by the range control before flying. It was also great to share my knowledge of drones with the other members of my Regiment who were very keen and interested to know about it.
How long have you been flying unmanned aircraft (including model helicopters etc.)?
I first flew one 3 years ago, but didn’t own one till just over 18 months ago.
What do you plan to do once you gain your PfCO?
For the time being, my plan is to continue to develop my experience in all aspects of the industry (flying, film/photo editing, mapping, surveying etc.) and start to build a client base while I’m still in full time employment. Afterwards, well, I’ll just see where life takes me.
Would you like to become our next ICARUS Ambassador? In return for championing our brand for a year, you'll receive a free ICARUS commercial drone course place worth £999. Learn more about how you can enter on our Ambassadors page here.
